Russell Brand Pleads Not Guilty to Rape and Sexual Assault Charges in London Court
British comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared in a London criminal court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to five charges of sexual offenses, including rape and sexual assault.
The media figure, who has transitioned into an anti-establishment influencer, is facing serious allegations: one count of rape, one of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault, all occurring between 1999 and 2005, involving four different women.
As Brand, 49, made his way to Southwark Crown Court dressed in an open-buttoned shirt and a dark blazer for the plea hearing, crowds gathered outside, having been informed that he had been granted conditional bail at a previous court appearance.
Russell Brand became well-known internationally as the husband of pop sensation Katy Perry, but in the UK, he’s more recognized for his provocative and often risqué comedy acts, along with his TV and radio appearances from the early 2000s.
Now splitting his time between the US and the UK, Brand recently appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court in London, where he remained expressionless as a prosecutor detailed the allegations against him.
On Friday, he stood in the dock, flanked by two officers, maintaining a stoic demeanor as he faced the court and entered his pleas.
He is set to go to trial next year, on June 3, 2026. Prosecutors brought charges against Brand following a police investigation into claims that surfaced in a 2003 Channel 4 documentary.
He faces accusations of raping a woman in a hotel room after an event in Bournemouth in 1999.
Another charge involves the oral rape and sexual assault of a woman in central London in 2004.
The allegations concern four women, including one who worked in television and another who was employed at a radio station at the time of the alleged incidents.
In a video response on X after his charges in April, Brand expressed that he was “grateful” for the “opportunity” to defend himself.
“I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity,” he said in the video.
Born in 1975 to working-class parents in Essex, just east of London, Brand kicked off his stand-up career as a teenager. He later made a name for himself as an MTV presenter and hosted a spin-off of Big Brother.
From 2006 to 2008, he had a show on BBC Radio 2, but he left after a controversial prank where he left a risqué voicemail for “Fawlty Towers” actor Andrew Sachs about his granddaughter.
Once known for his left-leaning political activism and Hollywood fame, he has since rebranded himself as a conservative figure for his millions of social media followers.
Brand often dives into conspiracy theories and shares wellness tips in his anti-establishment videos. Just last year, he announced that he found faith and was baptized in the Thames River.
