Officer Arrested After Fatal Shooting During Raila Vigil
A police officer has been arrested in connection with the shooting of a woman during a night vigil in Homabay County.
On October 17, Sub-County Police Commander Jashon Polloh confirmed that a woman was shot while attending a vigil in honor of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
Polloh mentioned that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been informed about the incident.
The woman was reportedly killed as she was making her way home on Thursday night, right near the entrance of the Homa Bay police station.
Polloh mentioned that after the candlelighting ceremony, supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party took to the streets, marching around Homa Bay town before heading to the police station.
During this time, mourners reportedly began throwing stones at the police station, which led an on-duty officer to fire shots.
Tragically, a woman was struck by a stray bullet and later succumbed to her injuries while being treated at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.
This incident unfolded just hours after an unknown number of people were allegedly shot during a chaotic scene at Kasarani Stadium on October 16, 2025, just before the public viewing of Raila’s body.
The turmoil erupted when the large crowd inside the stadium was suddenly ordered to leave as security personnel cleared the area. In a matter of minutes, the once-packed stadium was nearly empty.
Reports indicate that the chaos ignited when some attendees inside the stadium began throwing stones.
On October 17, Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga confirmed that around 100 people received treatment for injuries sustained during the mayhem at the viewing of the body at Kasarani.
“We would like to request Kenyans to keep calm and maintain order. We are all mourning; we should maintain peace,” he said.
“Let us not be aggressive in our efforts. Yesterday, there was chaos at Kasarani, and people got injured. Approximately 100 people received treatment. Please, we do not want people to get injured again,” Oluga added.
