Family of Late Blogger Albert Ojwang Denies Receiving Ksh10M as Lawyer Sets Record Straight
In a recent statement that counters the rumors floating around online, the family lawyer for the late blogger Albert Ojwang, Julius Juma, clarified that the family did not receive Ksh10 million from any individual. He made these remarks during the requiem mass held at Ridgeways Baptist Church on Thursday, July 2, where he discussed the financial support the family has received following Ojwang’s passing.
“It has been said or shared on various media channels that Mzee received KSh10 million,” he said. “I have been asked to set the record straight, and I am doing so on the pulpit.”
According to the family lawyer, the total financial support the family received was just under Ksh5.1 million. This amount includes contributions from President William Ruto and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga.
The lawyer went on, “The family wishes to confirm that they received Ksh2 million from the Head of State, Ksh1 million from Honourable Raila Odinga and Ksh2 million from Kenyans who gave in the form of Ksh1, Ksh10, and Ksh100 shillings, totalling Ksh5,060,000.”
Ojwang’s passing on June 8 stirred up a storm of controversy, leading to widespread outrage and protests across the nation in the weeks that followed.
His family has faced immense pressure on social media, especially after it was revealed that Ojwang’s father received a personal call from the president.
Initially, claims that the family had received Ksh10 million solely from donations by Kenyans were dismissed by Ojwang’s family spokesperson on June 24, who explained that there had been a misunderstanding regarding comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi’s comments.
The spokesperson clarified that Omondi was merely speculating on the potential funds that could be raised, based on the excitement generated after the initial Ksh2 million was collected.
In the meantime, Ojwang is set to be laid to rest on July 4 at his father’s home in Kakwonyo Village, Homa Bay County.
Regarding the investigation into Ojwang’s death, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved murder charges against Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam, Police Constables James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani, along with three others.
Last week, OCS Talaam and the other defendants sought to delay their murder trial, but High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi turned down their request.
Instead, the judge granted a request from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to move the case to the High Court in Kibera, where there’s already an ongoing murder trial involving Talaam and Police Constable James Mukhwana.
