Kibra MP Driver Fined Ksh100K
Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero’s driver, George Oduor, has been fined Ksh.100,000 by the Milimani Traffic Court after he pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous overtaking and obstructing other motorists along a busy Nairobi road.
Oduor’s case came to public attention earlier this week after a viral video surfaced online showing him recklessly maneuvering his vehicle and blocking other road users. The video, which quickly spread across social media platforms, sparked outrage from Kenyans who called for his arrest and tougher action against reckless drivers, particularly those linked to public officials.
According to police reports presented in court, the incident occurred on October 9 along Oloitoktok Road in Nairobi. Oduor was seen overtaking a long line of vehicles in traffic and, in the process, caused an unnecessary jam that inconvenienced dozens of motorists.
When arraigned in court, Oduor admitted to the offence without hesitation. In his mitigation, he apologized to the court and explained that he was in a hurry to drop a passenger at the airport. He pleaded for leniency, saying he had not intended to cause obstruction or endanger other road users.
“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone at the airport. It was a mistake, and I will not repeat it,” Oduor told the court.
However, the presiding magistrate noted that while the driver had shown remorse, the law clearly stipulates a fine of up to Ksh.100,000 for such traffic violations. She emphasized that reckless driving poses a serious risk to public safety and that the penalty should serve as a deterrent to others.
“I have considered your mitigation and apology, but the offence is grave. The law provides a fine of Ksh.100,000, which I hereby impose,” the magistrate ruled.
Oduor was ordered to pay the fine immediately, bringing the case to a swift close. The court also cautioned drivers against engaging in reckless behavior that puts the lives of other road users at risk.
