Raila Odinga’s Iconic White Hat
Winnie Odinga stepped off the plane at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, her expression reflecting a quiet determination.
In her hands, she held something profoundly significant: her father Raila Odinga’s iconic white fedora hat.
As she made her way from the aircraft toward the waiting officials and family members, the hat felt almost heavy with meaning — a tangible symbol of a life, a journey, and a legacy that was now making its way home.
Earlier, in Mumbai, India, where Raila’s body lay, the hat had caught attention when it was photographed resting on a beige seat in a waiting area — likely in the lounge where Winnie and other members of the delegation took a moment during the repatriation process.
That image quickly spread across Kenyan media and social media, stirring up emotions and speculation.
Some people wondered if the hat had been forgotten, while others speculated it was deliberately placed there as a sign of waiting, as if it were anticipating the journey back.
The visuals resonated deeply because the hat has been closely linked to Raila Odinga for years — often regarded as one of his signature pieces.
Winnie’s choice to carry the hat herself upon arrival elevates it from just an accessory to a powerful symbol of continuity.
It highlights the personal sorrow of a daughter and the collective mourning of a nation that saw in that white hat more than just a fashion statement.
For the Odinga family and their supporters, it has long been a part of Raila’s identity: a dignified tilt atop his head, worn at gatherings, public events, and moments of significance.
The hat has transcended mere clothing; it has become a visual shorthand through which many Kenyans recognized and remembered him.
It also represents a legacy of respect, continuity, and shared memory.
Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80.
His body arrived at JKIA at 9:33 am.
Several dignitaries, including President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, were present to receive the body.
Operations at the airport were put on hold for a while due to a security incident that occurred during the arrival of his remains.
The initial plan to transport the body from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Lee Funeral Home for final preparations, before it was to be taken to Parliament Buildings for public viewing, had to be scrapped because of growing crowd disturbances.
Now, the remains have been redirected to the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, as the overwhelming crowds made it impossible to carry out the transfer as originally intended.
