20 TikTokers Arrested in Nairobi
On Tuesday, January 21, over twenty content creators were taken into custody in Nairobi after numerous complaints from the public about harassment and inappropriate behavior.
Reports indicate that officers from the Pangani Police Station arrested the suspects following concerns raised by residents about their actions in the Eastleigh, Pangani, and Muthaiga neighborhoods.
These TikTokers are accused of intentionally targeting pedestrians, especially women and girls, while filming videos for social media.
According to the police, the group would sneak up on unsuspecting individuals from behind, touching them inappropriately, causing disturbances, and startling them—all in the name of content creation.
The videos they uploaded online to gain views and engagement ignited a wave of outrage across various social media platforms.
In the video, you can see young men harassing pedestrians on crowded streets, with their behavior ranging from unwanted physical contact to scaring innocent bystanders.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspects are set to appear in court on Wednesday, where they’ll face a variety of charges related to harassment and illegally recording people without their consent.
Last November, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris raised a red flag after a viral video surfaced, showing young men harassing girls while claiming they were just creating content.
In her remarks back then, Passaris condemned this behavior as a misuse of social media and expressed deep concern for the safety of young women facing such harassment.
She urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to take swift action against those responsible, emphasizing that using content creation as an excuse to assault others simply wouldn’t be tolerated.
“I’m calling on the DCI Kenya to catch these boys right away. Let this be a clear message to anyone who thinks it’s okay to harm others, especially under the pretense of making content. Enough is enough,” she stated.
The police have since confirmed that they are actively investigating the arrested suspects and have issued a strong warning to content creators.
