Citizen TV Journalist Escapes Death
On Monday, November 3, a group of journalists from Citizen TV had a close call with danger when they were attacked by bandits along the border of West Pokot and Turkana. The situation escalated quickly, forcing them to make a hasty escape.
The team, led by reporter Emmanuel Cheboit, was there to report on the worsening security issues in West Pokot when they were ambushed by individuals believed to be bandits.
During the incident in Kalomwai village, which sits on the border between Turkana and West Pokot, armed bandits started firing their weapons indiscriminately as they moved closer to where Cheboit and a group of locals had gathered.
Cheboit, who serves as the Turkana correspondent for a media outlet, had to abruptly end his interviews and seek refuge in nearby homes to stay safe.
A clip shared by Citizen TV captured a tense moment where a journalist and his team were seen fleeing for their lives as gunfire erupted, highlighting the serious insecurity issues plaguing the area.
Recent reports reveal that the rising violence in West Pokot has tragically claimed the lives of at least ten people over the past two weeks, instilling a deep sense of fear and panic among the local residents living in this unstable border region.
Just two days ago, two individuals were shot in the Nakumori area while making their way home from a church service. The following day, armed bandits launched an attack on a nearby gold mining site.
These bandits opened fire on a group of locals who were busy mining for gold, forcing them to scatter for safety. In the chaos, the armed men went on to set fire to an excavator valued at Ksh16 million.
“These bandits are wreaking havoc in our community. Just the other day, they attacked us as we were leaving an event organized by the governor. Thankfully, we managed to escape. God was with us,” shared a local resident.
As they expressed their concerns about the rising insecurity in the area, the residents have called on President William Ruto’s administration to step in and send more law enforcement officers to help.
This troubling news comes just three days after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen urged those involved in banditry to hand over their weapons or face the consequences.
Murkomen emphasized that the government has provided a short window for anyone in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to the nearest police station without the fear of arrest.
