KDF Officer Found Dead in Apparent Suicide
A soldier from the Kenya Defence Forces was tragically found dead in what appears to be a suicide in Bukati village, Butula, Busia County. This unfortunate event took place on Friday, December 5.
The soldier has been identified as Senior Sergeant Patrick Asala Bwibo, 53, who was serving with the Kenya Navy in Mombasa.
At this time, officials on the scene have not determined a clear motive for this heartbreaking incident.
It’s reported that he took his own life by hanging himself with a rope in a store located on his property.
His body has been transferred to the mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted. Both police and military authorities are currently investigating this tragic situation.
At the time of the incident, the victim was off duty.
Sadly, such incidents have been increasing within the military, despite ongoing efforts to address this troubling trend.
Similar to police officers and other members of the disciplined forces, many soldiers have succumbed to suicide, a situation often linked to the immense stress they face in their roles.
Officials note that police officers frequently bear the brunt of community issues, as they are tasked with maintaining law and order in challenging circumstances, all while putting their own lives on the line.
Over the years, there’s been a noticeable increase in deaths within the service, often linked to trauma.
The World Health Organization attributes these cases to a variety of factors, including unemployment, loss of loved ones, academic pressures, legal troubles, and financial strain.
Other contributing factors include bullying, past suicide attempts, a family history of suicide, issues with alcohol and substance abuse, as well as mental health conditions like depression and bipolar disorder.
In response, the government has stated that they are taking steps to tackle this serious issue. Various agencies have set up counseling sections to help address the problem within their departments.
They’ve also brought in counselors to oversee these sections, especially as the number of cases continues to rise at an alarming rate.
In a separate incident, police are looking into the case of a man who collapsed and died at a bar in Transmara, Narok County. According to the authorities, 35-year-old Lawrence Leperes was enjoying drinks at the bar when he suddenly collapsed. A friend who was with him managed to escape unharmed.
Two bar attendants have been taken into custody as investigations continue, and the body has been moved to the mortuary following the incident on Friday.
In Makuyu, Muranga County, a 43-year-old man named Wilson Kori Mwaniki was discovered lifeless on the floor of his home. The exact cause of his death remains unclear for now, and authorities have transferred the body to the mortuary while they await an autopsy, according to police reports.
