Catholic sister arrested after colleague’s death
A Catholic nun has been taken into custody by police in Meru County following the discovery of another nun’s body at a children’s center in the Nkambune area.
The arrested nun, who had recently been assigned to the institution and was set to assume its leadership, is thought to be linked to the death of Sister Anselmina Karimi, who was 65 years old.
Sister Karimi was the head of the Meru Children’s Centre until her untimely passing. According to police reports, her body was found at her home on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
She was discovered lying on her back, and initial investigations indicate that she had suffered injuries from a blunt object. Police officers arrived at the scene, and her body was taken to the mortuary as they continue their investigation and prepare for a post-mortem examination.
The nun has been taken into police custody while officers continue to gather evidence. Imenti East Police Commander Adano Abkula has confirmed the situation. Meanwhile, the body of the late Sister Karimi is being preserved as detectives work to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.
It’s not the first time nuns have made headlines for the wrong reasons. Back in September 2025, a nun at Asumbi Catholic Mission in Homa Bay was caught on camera slapping a junior nun during a church service.
The video spread like wildfire, igniting outrage among the public and raising serious questions about discipline in some religious institutions. Church officials quickly condemned the incident and assured everyone that appropriate internal measures would be taken against the nun involved.
This incident really shone a light on the urgent need for better oversight and accountability within religious communities to prevent similar situations in the future. Many people are now calling for stricter monitoring of convents and more training on professional conduct to ensure that respect and safety are upheld for everyone involved.
