Man Dies in Church
A 56-year-old man has been found dead under puzzling and disturbing circumstances inside a church toilet in Nyamemiso, within the Nyaribari Chache constituency of Kisii County. According to an official police report, the body of Barnabus Machoni Kitoyi was discovered in the toilet of Christ Nyamemiso Church, where it appeared he had been tied to a rafter with a black cloth fastened tightly around his neck.
What shocked officers even further was the presence of a machete placed prominently on the toilet door, a detail that immediately raised suspicions about the nature of the incident. The peculiar position of the weapon and the general state of the scene left investigators questioning whether the church compound was truly where the crime took place or if Kitoyi had been killed elsewhere and later moved to the church toilet.
Police officers who arrived at the scene noted that the area appeared untampered and undisturbed, something unusual in cases of foul play. This observation has strengthened the theory that the toilet could be a secondary crime scene. The officers also reported that the deceased had a visibly swollen stomach, and his shirt was stained with blood around the collar. The blood appeared to have come from his mouth, suggesting possible internal injuries or harm inflicted earlier.
Further inquiries by the authorities revealed that Kitoyi lived alone in a semi-permanent house located roughly one kilometer from the church. Neighbors described him as a quiet man who kept to himself, and investigators are now trying to piece together his final movements before the tragedy.
His body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it will remain as police wait for a postmortem examination. The autopsy is expected to give crucial clues about the actual cause of death and whether Kitoyi died by strangulation, poisoning, assault, or another unexplained factor.
Early information gathered from the community indicates that the deceased may have been entangled in a land dispute with neighbors. The disagreement had already been reported to local authorities and was being handled at the Kegati Chief’s Office, with a hearing scheduled for December 8th. Investigators are now considering whether the long-running dispute might be connected to his death.
Police have opened a full investigation as residents of Nyamemiso await answers in what has become one of the most unsettling incidents in the area in recent months.
