From Talanta to Raila Talanta Stadium
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has proposed that the Talanta Stadium, currently under construction in Nairobi, be renamed the “Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium” as a tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
This suggestion, which Cherargei shared on social media on October 24, 2025, comes just after the national mourning period for Odinga, who sadly passed away on October 15, 2025, in India. Cherargei highlighted Odinga’s significant contributions to democracy, human rights, devolution, and his love for sports.
His proposal fits well with the ongoing tributes to the former leader, showcasing Odinga’s impact on Kenya’s political and social landscape.
Cherargei emphasized the need to honor Odinga through national infrastructure projects, connecting the stadium’s name to a larger vision of inspiring young athletes and fostering sports development.
“Even as the National mourning period of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga comes to an end, we should name Talanta Stadium as Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium in honour of his celebrated legacy of democracy, rule of law, human rights, devolution and his love for sports. The future of sports, especially for our youth, looks secured under President Ruto’s administration because of the modernisation of sports facilities across the country. Well done, President Ruto administration, and now we are almost ready for AFCON 2027,” Cherargei X post.
The senator praised the ongoing efforts to upgrade sports facilities throughout the nation, highlighting the government’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The proposal to name the stadium comes after Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga made a similar request during Odinga’s funeral at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.
Wanga urged the President to honor Odinga by naming the impressive 60,000-seat venue after him, calling it a “magnificent” project that should embody his legacy. She also proposed organizing a memorial sports event to celebrate Odinga’s significant contributions to sports and community involvement.
The proposal to name the stadium has sparked a lively discussion about how Kenya honors its late leaders and the importance of infrastructure in keeping national memories alive. As Talanta Stadium approaches its completion, the idea of connecting its name to Odinga highlights a broader movement to celebrate his legacy in both the political and social arenas.
This initiative also emphasizes the government’s commitment to investing in sports infrastructure, with the goal of providing modern facilities for youth engagement and national events.
