Viewing turns chaotic several injured
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, several people were reported injured as large crowds gathered and surged along the route during the procession of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body to Kasarani Stadium.
The Kenya Red Cross team shared that they have been providing assistance to those injured among the mourners who lined Parliament Road and Cabanas during the procession to the stadium.
“We have and continue to attend to injuries sustained as crowds gathered along Parliament Road and at Cabanas during the procession of the late former Prime Minister to Kasarani Stadium, in collaboration with E-Plus Ambulances,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.
The organization has confirmed that its teams are strategically placed along the main routes to Kasarani Stadium, ready to offer first aid and psychosocial support to anyone who needs it.
Earlier in the day, after the former Prime Minister’s body arrived at JKIA, the Kenya Red Cross announced that their response and mental health teams were on standby, prepared to provide humanitarian and psychosocial assistance.
“Following the arrival of the body of the late former Prime Minister, the Kenya Red Cross response and mental health teams are on standby to provide much-needed humanitarian and psychosocial support. We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all,” the organization had stated.
The injuries come at a time when there’s an incredible turnout of mourners, leading ODM to move the public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body from the Parliament Buildings to the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
“Due to the surging number of mourners, the viewing of the body of HE Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga has been moved from Parliament buildings to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani,” ODM announced.
The day kicked off with quite a scene at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where operations were halted for two hours after a large crowd of mourners managed to breach security and access restricted areas during the arrival of the former Prime Minister’s remains.
Videos that surfaced online captured the chaos as ODM supporters spread out across the airport grounds, leading to a swift response from security personnel.
This security breach happened just moments before the casket was set to be moved from the plane to a gun carriage.
The Ministry of Health had dispatched 36 ambulances to ensure emergency medical coverage during the reception of Raila Odinga’s body at JKIA.
Dr. Ouma Oluga, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, stated that each ambulance was fully equipped with Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities, staffed by qualified paramedics, nurses, and drivers to guarantee an effective emergency response.
Moreover, a Port Health ambulance was on standby at JKIA to provide additional medical support and coordinate with other responding teams.
