Wall Collapse During House Demolition Claims Life in Machakos
A tragic incident unfolded in Isyukoni Village, Masinga Sub-county, Machakos County, after a house demolition ended in disaster. A collapsing wall claimed the life of one man and left another seriously injured, raising questions about the safety of demolition practices in the area.
According to Assistant Chief Timothy Kivati, the incident occurred while three men were carrying out demolition work on an old structure. As they worked, one of the walls—already weakened and unstable—suddenly gave way. Two of the workers were trapped beneath the heavy rubble. Unfortunately, one man died on the spot, while the second suffered serious injuries. The third man managed to escape unharmed.
Local residents quickly responded to the scene, trying to help free the trapped men before emergency services arrived. Despite their efforts, one of the victims could not be saved. The injured man was later rushed to Matuu Level Four Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical staff report that he remains in serious but stable condition.
The body of the deceased was moved to Mbaku Funeral Home in Matuu as family members and residents mourned the unexpected loss. The victim has been identified, but his name is being withheld until next of kin are officially notified.
In the wake of the tragedy, local authorities have launched a full investigation to uncover the cause of the collapse. Investigators are focusing on whether the building was properly assessed before demolition began and if appropriate safety precautions were taken. The incident has raised growing concerns about construction and demolition standards in rural areas, where regulations may not always be strictly followed.
“This is a very unfortunate event,” said Assistant Chief Kivati. “We are working with law enforcement and building inspectors to determine exactly what went wrong and ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.”
Community members are calling on county officials to enforce stricter safety rules and require proper supervision during demolition or construction projects. They argue that too often, such work is done informally, without oversight, increasing the risk of accidents and loss of life.
As the investigation continues, the Masinga community remains in mourning, with many expressing shock at how a routine demolition ended in tragedy. Local leaders have promised support for the affected families and emphasized the need to prioritize safety in all construction-related activities moving forward.
