Citi Hoppa Crash Kills One
Tragedy struck in Nairobi’s CBD on the night of Monday, September 13, when a Citi Hoppa bus was involved in a serious accident, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, confirmed that the incident took place near the Serena Hotel around 11 PM.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the 51-seater bus lost control and overturned, leaving passengers injured and trapped inside. The exact number of people on board at the time of the accident remains unclear.
The crash led to a major traffic jam along Kenyatta Avenue, with onlookers and other drivers gathering at the scene to help with rescue efforts and assess the situation.
Security and emergency service teams from the Nairobi County Government rushed to the scene right away to assist with the rescue efforts.
“There has been a serious accident involving a City Hoppa bus near Serena, on the way to the State House. Many people have been injured, and some are trapped under the bus,” Mosiria said.
“We are here at Serena, and we are mobilising for ambulances, so if you are an emergency service provider, please send your ambulances because we need more ambulances to take the injured to the hospital,” he added.
Security agencies have launched investigations to figure out the exact cause of the accident, which is believed to have been due to reckless driving.
Mosiria pointed out that there’s a pressing need for police and other authorities to strengthen traffic laws to tackle the rising number of road crashes, especially in the capital city. He also mentioned that safety belts and speed governors should be brought back to enhance road safety.
Motorists are being urged to stay alert and make sure they stick to the speed limits, keep their vehicles in good working order, and ensure that their passengers are safely buckled up with seat belts.
“I call upon the police and relevant authorities to reintroduce the Michuki traffic rules. Safety belts and speed governors must be enforced, along with strict speed limits within cities like Nairobi,” he said.
“We have recently lost lives that could have been saved if drivers had been more careful and followed the law, including the Waruku accident a few days ago and the tragic incident today at Valley Road near Serena,” he added.
