Human Rights Activist Dies
Human rights champion Mugambi Kiai has sadly passed away after struggling with kidney failure.
His death, which was confirmed on Monday, February 23, has sparked heartfelt tributes from leaders and human rights organizations alike, who hailed him as a courageous advocate for justice and constitutional rights.
In a touching tribute, law scholar Makau Mutua reflected on Kiai’s significant role in the nation’s fight for democracy, commending his steadfast dedication to civic engagement and accountability.
“I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the sudden loss of Mugambi Kiai, a pillar of Kenya’s civil society and a brilliant mind. His tremendous contributions to the quest for democracy and civic rights, as well as his fight against impunity, have truly made Kenya a better place,” he expressed.
Lawyer Willis Otieno also shared his admiration, remembering Kiai as a dear friend and a passionate advocate for justice, whose impact reached far beyond the realm of activism.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mugambi Kiai. Mugambi was not just a human rights activist ; he was a steadfast voice in the struggle for justice, accountability, and the dignity of the Kenyan people. As a friend and compatriot in the civil society movement, I witnessed firsthand his courage, clarity of thought, and unwavering commitment to constitutionalism,” he stated.
Reflecting on Kiai’s strength, even during his illness, Otieno highlighted that his legacy is deeply rooted in resistance and solidarity.
“Despite facing health challenges, his legacy was one of standing up against impunity and supporting the oppressed. Kenya has lost a principled champion for justice. The civil society community has lost a true ally. Personally, I have lost a dear friend,” he added.
Otieno expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and urged Kenyans to uphold Kiai’s ideals.
“During this difficult time, I hope his family finds the strength they need. May his contributions to the human rights movement continue to motivate us to move forward with determination, courage, and faith,” he added.
In a separate statement, Amnesty International-Kenya praised Kiai’s leadership and the lasting influence he had on the human rights movement.
“We want to express our gratitude for the leadership and impact of Mugambi Kiai, who sadly passed away this morning. He will be remembered as a warm, compassionate, and brave defender of human rights. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Kiai family and his broader community of human rights defenders and journalists,” the organization stated.
Kiai was a trained lawyer, holding degrees from both the University of Nairobi and Harvard Law School.
He dedicated a significant part of his career to advocating for human rights, governance, and freedom of expression.
In January 2020, Kiai took on the role of Regional Director for Eastern Africa at ARTICLE 19, a global organization focused on civil liberties and promoting freedom of expression and access to information.
In this position, he spearheaded efforts to advocate for press freedom, civic space, and democratic rights not just in Kenya, but throughout the Eastern Africa region.
Kiai was also recognized for his insightful writings and commentary on human rights, governance, and democratic issues, which appeared in various publications, including the Daily Nation.
In February 2023, he faced a serious health challenge when he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure, a condition that prevents the kidneys from effectively filtering blood.
This diagnosis meant he needed ongoing dialysis and ultimately required a kidney transplant to live without the constant need for dialysis.
In mid-2024, a fundraiser was organized to help cover the costs of the transplant surgery and medical expenses.
He underwent the transplant in March 2025 as part of his battle against the disease, but sadly, he ultimately lost his fight after a long struggle with his health.
