A 55-year-old man has been accused of fatally attacking a General Service Unit (GSU) officer with an arrow near State House in Nairobi.

He will remain in police custody for 14 days while investigations into this shocking incident are ongoing. The suspect, Kimunye Musyimi, who hails from Makueni County, appeared in court on Tuesday, where detectives requested more time to wrap up their investigation.

Preliminary reports indicate that Musyimi traveled to Nairobi from Makueni on Sunday night, and it was the following morning that he allegedly carried out the attack.

In court, the suspect—who was seen limping and needed help from police officers—asked for permission to get medical treatment.

The incident took place on Monday morning at around 8:10 a.m. near State House Gate D on Dennis Pritt Road.

According to the police, the attacker, who was armed with a bow and arrows, confronted the officers at the gate and disregarded multiple commands to surrender.

It’s reported that he shot an arrow that hit Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the ribs.

Despite being quickly taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, Constable Mattanka unfortunately passed away from his injuries while receiving care.

His body was later transferred to the hospital mortuary, where it will await a post-mortem examination.

In a statement issued by National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Njaga, the Service strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act,” while commending the officers at the scene for their swift response, which prevented further casualties.

“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm,” the statement read in part.
