A Meru law court is expected to deliver a key ruling on Tuesday that could determine the immediate fate of a Catholic nun accused of being involved in the death of her colleague. The court will decide whether Sister Caroline Kanjiru will be released on bail or detained for an additional 14 days as investigations into the shocking case continue.
Sister Caroline, who serves in a local Catholic mission, is under investigation following the death of another nun, Sister Ansilime Karimi, from Nkabune. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Meru Catholic community, with many expressing disbelief that two women of faith could be connected to such a tragic event.
During the brief court session, investigating officer Abdul Tulla asked the magistrate to allow police more time to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding Sister Ansilime’s death. He told the court that the accused might flee if released, considering the gravity of the allegations against her.
According to police reports presented in court, Sister Caroline claimed that she had been transporting Sister Ansilime to Nkubu Hospital after she allegedly fell ill. However, medical assessments and preliminary forensic findings contradicted her account. Investigators found that the deceased had visible bruises on her hands and legs, raising suspicions that she might have been assaulted before her death.
Tulla emphasized that investigators are pursuing several leads and that releasing the suspect prematurely could interfere with witness statements or tamper with evidence. He insisted that the 14-day detention period would allow the police to conclude critical parts of the inquiry.
In her defense, Sister Caroline’s lawyer dismissed the notion that she was a flight risk. The lawyer argued that the nun has deep community ties and has always cooperated with authorities. He further pleaded with the court to consider her religious background and clean record, insisting that justice would not be obstructed by granting her bail.
The court will announce its ruling on Tuesday, a decision keenly awaited by both the religious community and the public, as the investigation continues to unfold.
