Man, 2 Grandsons killed by a tree in Kisumu
Agoro Village in Kajulu, Kisumu County, is in deep mourning after a heartbreaking incident where a man and his two grandsons lost their lives when a tree, uprooted by heavy rains and fierce winds, crashed onto their home.
Two other family members were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving care.
This tragic event unfolded on Thursday night, following hours of relentless rainfall and strong winds that battered the area.
Residents reported that the ground had become heavily saturated from the continuous rains, which weakened the roots of the large trees nearby.
Out of nowhere, one of these trees fell onto the family’s house, trapping the occupants inside and leaving them with little chance to escape.
Neighbors rushed to help after hearing loud screams and a deafening crash, only to be met with a devastating scene.
Rescue efforts went on for several hours as community members banded together to clear the debris and recover the victims.
Eventually, the bodies of the three who had died were found, while the injured were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
This tragedy has left the Agoro community in shock, with residents remembering the deceased as part of a humble and tight-knit family.
A crowd of residents gathered at the homestead, offering each other comfort, while others reached out to authorities for help for the families struggling with the relentless rains.
“This rain has brought so much pain,” one resident shared.
“We’re losing lives, homes are being wrecked, and countless families have nowhere to go.”
The situation has unfolded against a backdrop of significant destruction due to heavy rainfall in Kisumu County.
Many areas, especially those in low-lying regions and close to rivers and Lake Victoria, have been hit hard by flooding, forcing dozens of families to evacuate their homes.
The floodwaters have not only submerged houses but have also ruined personal belongings and washed away crops, leaving many residents in a state of distress.
In addition, some roads in the county have become completely impassable because of the flooding, which has disrupted transportation and economic activities.
Kisumu County is known to be vulnerable to flooding during extended rainy seasons.
Issues like poor drainage systems, encroachment on riverbanks, and rising water levels continue to put residents at risk of facing these disasters whenever heavy rains hit.
County officials are urging those living in high-risk and flood-prone areas to stay alert and take the necessary precautions.
