Deadly Haiti MSS Crash
Tragically, one officer from the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) lost his life on Sunday, August 31, in a horrific accident in Haiti.
MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka shared that the incident took place on the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road, specifically in the Perlerin 9 area.
Ombaka explained that the officers were engaged in a recovery operation with two MaxxPro vehicles. During this operation, one vehicle was towing the other when it encountered mechanical issues, which ultimately led to the accident.
“On Sunday, 31 August 2025, at approximately 1700 hours, officers of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) were involved in a tragic road traffic accident along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road at Perlerin 9.
“The incident occurred during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles. While one vehicle was towing the other, it developed mechanical problems leading to the incident,” read part of the statement.
The tragic accident led to the loss of two lives: an MSS officer and a Haitian civilian, both of whom were declared dead after being rushed to Lambert Santé Hospital in Pétion-Ville.
In addition, eight other MSS officers were injured, with three of them reported to be in critical condition.
Ombaka mentioned that those three injured officers will need to be medically evacuated to the Dominican Republic for specialized care.
“Eight MSS officers sustained injuries, three of the injured are in serious condition and require medical evacuation to the Dominican Republic for specialized treatment after initial care at the Aspen Level 2 Hospital at the LSA 2,” Ombaka stated.
He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident on Sunday evening.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them, as well as with the injured, as they recover,” Ombaka added.
This marks the third tragic loss that MSS has faced since Kenyan officers were sent to the Caribbean nation back in June 2024.
Earlier this year, between February and March, two Kenyan police officers lost their lives while on duty in Haiti.
The first officer, Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, was shot and killed on February 23 during a shootout with gangs in the Savien region of Haiti.
The second officer, Bénédict Kabiru, met a similar fate on March 25 when he was ambushed by gangs in Pont-Sondé, situated in the Artibonite region.
This incident comes just weeks after three MSS officers were injured in a confrontation with gangs in Port-au-Prince.
The MSS officers were responding to a distress call from residents in the Kenscoff area, who reported an impending gang attack.
Unfortunately, two armored MSS personnel carriers (APCs) became stuck in trenches that the gangs had deliberately dug.
Attempts to recover the two APCs were unsuccessful, and both were ultimately set ablaze by the gangs.
The three MSS officers who were injured during the attack were taken to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for treatment and were later discharged.
