My Life is in Danger- Gachagua
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a stand against Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of losing grip on the National Police Service and letting politicians run unchecked security operations.
He made these remarks after his convoy was attacked in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, on Friday, January 9, 2026.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Saturday, January 6, 2026, the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) expressed concern over why the police command structure seems to have been handed over to political figures, cautioning that the service is quickly turning into “a source of insecurity instead of protection.”
”Why have you surrendered the command of the National Police Service to politicians? Are you not embarrassed that the National Police Service has become the cause of insecurity in the country instead of providing security to citizens?” Gachagua posed.
Gachagua has alleged that on Friday, January 9, 2026, a group of officers dressed in civilian clothes burst into Kirinyaga County and seized two police Land Cruisers from the Baricho and Wang’uru police stations.
He claims that this operation was led by an officer from the Murang’a Woman Representative’s office, the same individual he accused of being involved in the attack on Senator John Methu back in July 2025, and who also participated in the violence during the Narok by-elections.
Additionally, he noted that this officer, along with askaris from the Kirinyaga County government, set up a roadblock on the Sagana–Kagio–Kutus road, just a short distance from the Sagana Police Station.
”Yesterday, 9th January 2026, in Kirinyaga County, a special squad of officers in civilian clothes arrived in Kirinyaga County and commandeered two police land cruisers from Baricho and Wang’uru police stations.
The squad was under the command of an officer attached to the Murang’a women representative,” Gachagua said.
”This officer is the same one who attacked Senator John Methu in Murang’a in July 2025. The same officer and the women representative took over Narok police command during the recent by-elections and attacked my convoy and unleashed terror on the people of Narok town,” He went ahead.
The former deputy president reported that one of his security officers sustained serious injuries, several vehicles were damaged, and members of his media team had their communication equipment stolen. He mentioned that they were prevented from reaching Kagio town for a scheduled public event, which forced them to turn back and take a different route.
”The special squad, with the help of the county askaris, violently attacked my convoy with tear gas and live ammunition. They seriously injured one of our security personnel, damaged our vehicles and robbed our media team of their communication equipment. They stopped us from proceeding to Kagio town for a public engagement.” Gachagua narrated.
Despite the earlier incident, Gachagua and his team made their way to Kagio, where they spoke to a crowd of thousands of enthusiastic supporters. Interestingly, he pointed out that a separate group of uniformed officers, led by the local Sub-County Police Commander, kept an eye on the meeting from a distance. They allowed the gathering to unfold without any issues and left once it wrapped up.
