MP who succeded Jirongo is dead
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Enoch Kibunguchy. He died while receiving treatment at Eldoret Hospital after a long struggle with illness.
At 72 years old, Kibunguchy took over from the late Cyrus Jirongo as the Lugari MP, serving from 2003 to 2007. He later represented Likuyani, where he was elected for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2022.
Throughout his political journey, Kibunguchy was affiliated with various political parties, including FORD-Kenya, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and most recently, the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), which he joined this year.
In addition to his role as an MP, Kibunguchy also made significant contributions as an Assistant Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health and held key positions at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Coast General Hospital.
As he confirmed the sad news, the current Lugari MP, Nabii Nabwera, expressed his sorrow over the loss, remembering the deceased not just as a leader but as a man who shared countless moments of reflection and wisdom with him.
The legislator noted that during his time in public service, Kibunguchy was recognized for his quiet determination, humility, and integrity. He emphasized that one of the former MP’s lasting legacies was his unwavering dedication to education.
“He believed deeply that knowledge was the greatest equaliser, and he translated this belief into action by initiating and supporting the establishment of several schools from the ground up,” Nabwera stated.
“The larger Lugari community has lost a towering yet gentle figure. I have lost a friend whose wisdom I treasured and whose presence I will dearly miss,” he added.
His passing comes just two weeks after Jirongo tragically lost his life in a horrific road accident in the Karai area of Naivasha, right along the bustling Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The former KANU heavyweight died on December 13, around 2 a.m., while he was driving to Nairobi. His Mercedes collided with a 65-seater bus that was making its way to Kisumu.
Jirongo represented the Lugari Constituency as an MP from 1997 to 2002. At 64 years old, he also held the position of Minister for Rural Development during the administration of Kenya’s second President, Daniel Moi, from March to December 2002.
In 2022, he ran for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Party (UDP) but unfortunately lost to Fernandes Barasa from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
