Raila’s bodyguard is overwhelmed by grief
An incredibly emotional moment unfolded at Parliament on Friday morning as Maurice Ogeta, the longtime bodyguard of the late Raila Odinga, broke down while viewing the former Prime Minister’s body.
Dressed in a dark blue suit and sporting sunglasses, Ogeta looked visibly shaken as he walked into the hall.
With the support of Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, he shared a heartfelt embrace with President William Ruto, a moment that transcended political divides.
His lips quivered and his steps faltered as he made his way to his seat.
Once seated, Ogeta was seen crying, wiping away his tears, his grief resonating with the sorrow felt throughout the nation.
Olekina stayed close by, offering comfort as mourners watched in silence.
Ogeta’s emotional breakdown served as a poignant reminder of the personal connections that underpin public service.
Having stood by Raila through years of political battles and personal victories, his reaction reflected the profound sense of loss experienced by those who were closest to the ODM leader.
Behind those dark glasses and serious expressions, Ogeta has been carrying a heavy emotional burden.
In Raila’s final days in India, Ogeta was one of the few who remained by his side, a quiet witness to the last chapter of a remarkable life.
Ogeta has been a loyal protector of Raila for many years, and his commitment was truly put to the test in 2023 during a politically charged time when he was taken by unknown individuals thought to be police officers.
For several days, he was missing. When he was finally released, he was found blindfolded and visibly shaken, a stark reminder of the dangers that come with safeguarding someone as significant and controversial as Raila.
Despite the ordeal, Ogeta stood firm. He returned to his role, supporting Raila through rallies, negotiations, and moments of national crisis.
With a career spanning over two decades, Ogeta has undergone elite military and security training around the world.
Reports suggest he received professional training in Afghanistan and France, each for two years, where he focused on advanced protection, intelligence gathering, and tactical response.
His most extensive training was with Israel’s Special Forces, where he dedicated 15 years to mastering skills in counter-surveillance and rapid combat response.
Additionally, he trained with Russian forces for 10 years, gaining valuable expertise in high-level personal protection.
Tragically, Raila passed away on October 15, 2025, in India, where he was receiving treatment.
He’s set to be laid to rest on October 19 in Bondo.
