Child Marriage Turns Tragic
The tragic details surrounding the death of seventeen-year-old Gaala Adan have emerged in the Garissa High Court, revealing a heartbreaking tale of child marriage and domestic abuse within a refugee camp.
Her passing has not only brought sorrow to her community but has also reignited discussions about the serious risks young girls face in such vulnerable environments.
On Tuesday, six witnesses took the stand to share their accounts of the tragic events surrounding Gaala’s death. Among them were her mother, Amina Abdi Noor, her stepfather, Mahamud Mohamed, landlady Qurisha Ibrahim, two neighbors, and Corporal Lucas Musambi, the investigating officer.
Amina recounted that her daughter, who was born on January 1, 2008, married the first accused, Mohammed Kassim Tiffow, on February 22, 2025, in a traditional ceremony at Dagahaley Refugee Camp.
She described how the marriage quickly soured, with Gaala feeling trapped and expressing her regret about the union.
In the days leading up to her death, Gaala sent her mother several voice notes filled with fear and frustration, detailing the abuse she was enduring. Their final conversation occurred on the very night she lost her life.
One neighbor testified that on the evening of the incident, an accused had informed him that Mohammed had been stabbed by his wife.
When they rushed to the scene, they found Mohammed outside with stab wounds and quickly took him to the hospital. Upon returning to the house, they were horrified to discover it was on fire, with Gaala trapped inside.
Despite the attempts to save her, she suffered severe burns and tragically passed away shortly after.
Her stepfather, Mahamud Mohamed, shared the devastating experience of seeing her body, which was so badly burned that he couldn’t even recognize her.
He also disclosed that he had been aware of the abuse she faced in her marriage, which only deepened the family’s pain.
Corporal Musambi, the officer in charge of the investigation, mentioned that the police found a knife, documented the scene, and gathered crucial evidence.
He was present for the postmortem that took place on March 22, 2025, and confirmed that statements were taken from all witnesses. The three suspects were subsequently arrested and initially brought before the Wajir Magistrate’s Court before the case was moved to the Garissa High Court.
Mohammed, Mussa Sheikh Ahmed, and Adan Mohamme Ahmed are facing charges for the murder of Gaala on March 22, 2025, in Lolkuta South Sublocation, Wara Location, Hadado Subcounty, Wajir County.
