Wamatangi Properties Demolished Midnight
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is facing mounting pressure after several of his businesses located near Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi were vandalized in a dramatic overnight operation early Wednesday morning. The incident has sparked outrage among local traders and residents, many of whom are questioning the motive behind the demolitions and the manner in which they were carried out.
According to eyewitnesses, a heavy police presence descended on the area shortly after midnight. Officers reportedly fired teargas canisters and live ammunition into the air to disperse crowds and force workers and bystanders out of the premises before demolition equipment moved in. The sudden operation caught many business owners by surprise, as they claimed no prior notice or warning had been issued.
“The bulldozers were running over everything, including cars that were parked here,” said Paul Kilonzo, who witnessed the destruction firsthand. He added that the scene was chaotic, with people scrambling to salvage what they could as machines flattened structures within minutes.
A number of businesses were affected by the demolition, including a car wash, a car dealership, and a car spare parts shop. Reports from the scene indicate that at least five vehicles were damaged during the operation, with some being completely vandalized as bulldozers moved through the area without pause.
Local traders have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as selective and unfair. They argue that other businesses operating in the same vicinity were left untouched, raising concerns about possible political motivation. Several residents claimed the operation specifically targeted properties linked to Governor Wamatangi.
“Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed here,” said Isaac Mbugua, a local business owner. “There was no notice given, no court order shown, and no explanation. This is politically motivated. The people behind this are clearly targeting Governor Wamatangi.”
The demolitions have reignited debate over the use of force during enforcement operations in Nairobi, especially when livelihoods are at stake. Critics argue that even if the structures were illegal, authorities should have followed due process and issued clear notices to allow owners time to vacate and remove their property.
Governor Wamatangi later arrived at the scene to assess the extent of the damage. While he did not immediately address the media, his presence drew attention as supporters gathered, demanding accountability and transparency from the authorities involved.
As investigations and reactions continue, the incident is expected to fuel further political and legal discussions, particularly around property rights, enforcement procedures, and alleged political persecution.
