Rescue Teams Rush to Mwihoko Plane Crash Scene
A light aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Mwihoko, Githurai 45, Nairobi, on Thursday afternoon, causing panic among residents and drawing a swift emergency response. The aircraft, identified as a Cessna Citation 560, was en route to Somalia when the incident occurred.
According to officials, the plane took off from Wilson Airport and was heading to Hargeisa when it lost contact with air traffic controllers at approximately 12:17 PM. About two hours later, around 2 PM, it tragically went down in the densely populated Mwihoko area, colliding with buildings before catching fire.
The aircraft is reported to have had four individuals on board—two crew members and two medics. While the exact mission of the flight has not been confirmed, it is believed to have been medical in nature, given the presence of medics on board. The condition of those on the flight was still unknown at the time of publishing, as authorities had not released any official statements regarding casualties.
Shocking footage from the crash site showed the wreckage engulfed in flames, with plumes of black smoke rising into the air. Residents stood at a distance, clearly shaken by the incident but unable to offer much help due to the intensity of the fire.
Emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene. Fire engines were dispatched to battle the blaze, while military officers and police worked to secure the area and control the large crowd that had gathered. The proximity of the crash site to a military base likely contributed to the rapid response.
Githurai 45 Sub-county Police Commander Maurice Odanga confirmed the incident, saying aviation and security experts were already on-site to begin investigations. He urged the public to avoid the area and allow emergency teams to carry out their duties.
As investigations continue, authorities have promised to release more details as they become available, including the identities of those on board and the cause of the crash.
