Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), has put forth a compelling case for embracing a one-term presidency culture in Kenya. She believes this approach would promote ethical leadership, help combat corruption, and prioritize service over the mere desire to cling to power.

The seasoned politician shared her thoughts during a morning television segment on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as she laid out her vision for a system of rotational leadership in light of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

“I am not seeking two terms, Ruto one term, and Martha Karua one term, and I am saying that for the next four elections, Kenyans should elect presidents who pledge only for one term,” Karua stated emphatically.

She stressed that no single leader can complete the nation’s development agenda, advocating for a mindset where presidents focus on impactful contributions within a five-year term.

“We must entrench the culture that leadership is transient and that none of us will ever finish building this country. You do your best during your 5 years and leave it for the next,” she added.

Karua connected the idea of leaders seeking second terms with widespread corruption, pointing out that they often sacrifice the rights of citizens and misuse public resources to finance their re-election efforts.

“To foster a culture where leaders don’t have to violate people’s rights or steal their money just to campaign for a second term, we really need to embrace a system of one-term limits,” she explained.

Drawing from her own experience as the Minister for Water and Irrigation, where she served just one term, Karua emphasized that meaningful achievements can indeed happen in a short timeframe.

“I was the minister for water for only one term, and people still remember a lot of the work I accomplished. It’s entirely possible to achieve such results not just in a ministry but across the entire country, because all you need is to be a team leader who can elevate the team to new heights,” she pointed out.

She stresses the importance of effective leadership that prioritizes results over simply holding onto a position for a long time.

Her comments echo her earlier statements made during her 2027 presidential campaign launch in September 2025, where she committed to serving just one term if elected. Karua’s advocacy for a one-term standard also takes aim at the current President William Ruto, whom she believes is destined for only a single term, while she positions herself as a servant-leader dedicated to building a solid foundation for future administrations.
