Kenyan-Born Joan Commands Royal Air Force
A new station commander has officially taken over leadership at RAF Wittering, marking a fresh chapter for one of the Royal Air Force’s key bases near Peterborough.
Wing Commander Joan Ochuodho assumed command this week, succeeding Wing Commander Nikki Duncan, who recently completed her tenure at the station. Ochuodho brings more than two decades of experience to the role, having joined the RAF in 2003 and steadily rising through the ranks.
As station commander, Ochuodho is now responsible for overseeing approximately 1,400 people, including military personnel, civilian staff, and contractors who play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the base. RAF Wittering is home to around 900 serving military members, many of whom can be deployed worldwide at short notice in support of the UK’s defence commitments.
Speaking after taking up her new post, Ochuodho described the appointment as a “tremendous honour and privilege.” She acknowledged the responsibility that comes with leading such a large and diverse workforce but said she feels fortunate to command a highly skilled and committed team.
“While the role comes with its challenges, I feel incredibly lucky to lead such a dedicated group of people who work tirelessly to deliver and support our defence efforts,” she said.
The new station commander also expressed her enthusiasm for building strong relationships with the surrounding community, noting the importance of cooperation between RAF Wittering and local residents. Community engagement, she said, remains a key priority as the station continues its operational duties.
Beyond her responsibilities at RAF Wittering, Ochuodho plays an active role in RAF sport. She serves as an adviser to the RAF Football Association board and represents the service on the National Football Association Council, highlighting her commitment to promoting teamwork and wellbeing within the forces.
Ochuodho is the fourth woman to command RAF Wittering, reflecting the growing representation of women in senior leadership roles within the Royal Air Force. She is married and a proud parent of two sons.
Outgoing commander Wing Commander Nikki Duncan paid tribute to the station, describing her time at RAF Wittering as “nothing short of amazing.” She added that the base will always hold a special place in her heart as she moves on to her next role.
