MKU awards scholarship to Truphena Muthoni
Mt Kenya University has granted a full academic scholarship to environmentalist Truphena Muthoni, honoring her remarkable dedication to environmental conservation and her advocacy for mental well-being through impactful, endurance-based activism.
This scholarship will allow Muthoni to kick off her studies at MKU in January 2026, representing a major step forward in her evolution from grassroots activist to a formally trained environmental advocate.
The scholarship was officially presented by Professor Peter Wanderi, Principal of Corporate Services, on behalf of MKU Vice-Chancellor Professor Deogratius Jaganyi.
In announcing the award, MKU praised Muthoni for her remarkable impact on the community and her unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. These qualities were key factors in their decision, reflecting the university’s mission to nurture environmental leaders and foster sustainable development through education.
Muthoni’s accolade comes on the heels of her incredible achievement of setting a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous tree hug. She held unbroken physical contact with an indigenous tree for an astonishing 72 hours at the Nyeri Governor’s Office grounds.
This remarkable feat, completed on December 11, 2025, captured the attention of the public and sparked widespread celebration. Onlookers admired her resilience and discipline, as well as the important message she aimed to share about forest conservation and raising awareness around climate change.
This new record beats her previous 48-hour world record, which she set at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi and was officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
Her earlier accomplishment also highlighted the significance of environmental action and emotional well-being, which have become key themes in her advocacy work.
In a significant recognition of her contributions, President William Ruto welcomed Muthoni to State House in Nairobi on December 15, where he presented her with the Head of State Commendation (HSC) medal for her outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship.
Additionally, the President appointed Muthoni as the Ambassador for the national 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign. This initiative is a key part of Kenya’s environmental strategy, aimed at restoring forest cover and tackling the impacts of climate change by 2032.
With this new role, Muthoni will lead grassroots efforts under the campaign, focusing on mobilizing youth, community organizations, and county governments to participate in tree-planting activities and promote sustainable land-use practices.
This appointment not only highlights government support but also aims to harness her influence to boost national engagement in reforestation initiatives.
Beyond just the ambassadorial title, Ruto’s recognition package offers Muthoni and her team a fully sponsored holiday, arranged through the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board.
Additionally, she’ll receive support from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, which will help her travel internationally to gain valuable experience in conservation leadership and environmental education.
Muthoni’s ongoing tree-hugging challenge—braving heavy rain, chilly nights, and physical discomfort—has been widely seen as a powerful symbol aimed at capturing public attention and igniting conversations about the urgent need for environmental protection.
Through her efforts, she’s combined physical endurance with a strong environmental message, inspiring both Kenyans and global audiences to reconsider how human well-being is connected to a flourishing natural world.
MKU’s scholarship offer not only paves the way for her academic growth but also highlights the institution’s recognition of unconventional advocacy as a legitimate route to leadership in environmental management and climate action.
As Muthoni gears up to start her university journey in 2026, her path reflects a growing synergy between youth-led advocacy, national policy initiatives, and institutional support, all aimed at nurturing a new generation of environmental leaders dedicated to sustainable development and climate resilience.
