Raila’s bodyguard finally lands a job
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s longtime personal bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, has just been appointed as Mombasa County’s adviser on Security Affairs. This marks an exciting new chapter in his public service career, especially just months after Odinga’s passing.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir took to social media to share the news, highlighting Ogeta’s extensive experience in protective services and his profound understanding of security operations, which he has built over decades of service both locally and internationally.
This appointment comes on the heels of the Mombasa County Public Service Board creating new advisory roles in accordance with existing legal frameworks.
Governor Nassir emphasized that Ogeta’s background makes him an excellent fit to advise the county on security issues, pointing out his close professional relationship with the late Raila Odinga.
“I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law. Mr. Maurice Ogeta has been appointed to serve as Advisor, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa, the governor said.
“This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late Founding Party Leader, H. E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H,” he added,
Ogeta dedicated 18 years of his life as Odinga’s personal bodyguard, placing him right in the middle of some of Kenya’s most pivotal political events.
With a reputation for his calm demeanor and disciplined nature, he stood by Odinga through intense political campaigns, nationwide protests, and times of heightened tension. Even with Odinga’s prominent public image, Ogeta kept a low profile, earning respect in security circles for his professionalism and self-restraint.
After Odinga’s passing, Ogeta showed his unwavering loyalty by accompanying the cortege on its final journey to the late leader’s burial site at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.
In a heartfelt tribute, Ogeta referred to Odinga as both a leader and a father figure, highlighting a relationship built on trust, guidance, and mentorship.
Hailing from Kondele in Kisumu County, Ogeta has mostly kept his personal life out of the spotlight. However, his career has certainly had its share of risks.
During the nationwide protests in July 2023, he was taken by individuals believed to be plainclothes police officers and held for over three days before being released without any charges.
His recent appointment comes on the heels of former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announcing plans to assist Ogeta in launching a VIP protection and security training firm, suggesting that his expertise could greatly benefit a broader range of security professionals.
Ogeta’s move into a public advisory role signifies a shift from years spent behind the scenes to a position of influence in county governance.
In the same announcement, Governor Nassir appointed Ken Ambani as Adviser on Creative Arts, stating that this initiative aims to bolster Mombasa’s creative industry and create more opportunities for young artists throughout the county.
