four killed in fire incidents in Kibera
Tragedy struck in Nairobi’s Kibera slums and Kitale Town, where at least four people lost their lives in separate fire incidents.
According to the police, several individuals were left without homes following the fires that occurred on Tuesday.
In a different incident in Kangemi, Nairobi, at least one person sustained injuries.
The first fire broke out in the Laini Saba area, destroying around 70 structures.
Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
It’s believed that the blaze started in one of the homes and quickly spread to nearby buildings.
Residents and police noted that there was a blackout in the area just before power was restored, after which the fire erupted.
Witnesses reported that a fire engine arrived on the scene and helped to control the flames.
During the firefighting efforts, two bodies, charred beyond recognition, were found in the rubble.
Nairobi Police Commander George Seda stated that the bodies have been taken to the mortuary for identification and autopsy.
In another part of Kitale Town, police are looking into a house fire that claimed the lives of two individuals.
The bodies were found after the fire was brought under control. It’s believed the two had returned home early Tuesday morning in the Makunga village, Kibomet area, and lit a candle or cigarette, which may have sparked the fire.
Recently, about ten other houses were caught in the flames during the incident, and the bodies were taken to the mortuary while awaiting an autopsy.
In Kangemi, a man suffered burns and injuries from a fire that erupted in the Makaburini area, destroying several buildings. The exact cause of the fire is still unclear.
Fortunately, the victim was quickly transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. Meanwhile, in Kawangware, Nairobi, a family of four managed to escape unharmed when a fire broke out in their home due to a gas cylinder explosion.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported from the Tuesday morning incident.
Authorities mentioned that property of an unknown value was lost in the fire, and a team of detectives is now looking into the matter.
Officials have pointed out that many informal settlements struggle with inadequate access roads, which hampers emergency response efforts.
There’s an ongoing initiative to build roads in these areas and to formalize electricity connections for homes.
It’s worth noting that illegal power connections have been associated with some fire incidents. President William Ruto has unveiled plans to regularize electricity connections in the affected regions.
