A police constable tragically lost his life on Monday, November 3, while overseeing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) in Turkana County.
Reports suggest that the officer was attacked by suspected bandits who shot him in the head and then fled with his AK-47, which was loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
The officer was with his partner, keeping watch over an examination container at the Deputy County Commissioner’s offices when they were suddenly ambushed by bandits.
In no time, a group of police officers was sent to the scene, and the officer’s body was taken to a nearby mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects were targeting the officer’s gun, and efforts are currently in progress to recover the rifle.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of rising insecurity in Turkana, with reports suggesting that at least ten people have lost their lives to bandits along the Turkana-West Pokot border in the past two weeks.
Despite the government’s efforts to send a multi-agency team that includes the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service (NPS), insecurity remains a significant issue in Turkana.
Turkana is one of the counties involved in Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which also includes West Pokot, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, Isiolo, and Baringo.
This development follows weeks after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced strong measures aimed at tackling banditry in the troubled North Rift regions.
While speaking in Madera County on September 24, Murkomen shared the government’s plan to equip chiefs and sub-chiefs in areas prone to banditry with firearms to aid in fighting this ongoing problem.
He pointed out that the decision came directly from requests made by the chiefs and sub-chiefs in areas known for banditry, with the CS mentioning that some chiefs in Kerio Valley have already received licensed firearms.
Murkomen also urged anyone in possession of illegal guns to turn them in right away at the nearest police station, warning that failure to do so would lead to serious consequences from the government.
