USA Vice President Vance to visit Kenya
United States Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit Kenya next month, following his participation in a high-level summit in South Africa, according to a source who spoke to Reuters on Monday. The visit underscores Washington’s growing engagement with East Africa at a time when Kenya continues to strengthen its position as a strategic U.S. ally on the continent.
While officials have not released a detailed itinerary or agenda for the visit, diplomatic observers believe that trade, security, and regional cooperation will top the discussion list. Kenya has been eager to finalize a bilateral trade agreement with the U.S. by the end of the year—an initiative aimed at boosting exports, attracting American investment, and deepening economic ties between the two nations.
In 2024, the U.S. formally designated Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, placing it in a select group of trusted security partners outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The move strengthened defense and counterterrorism cooperation between the two countries, especially in the Horn of Africa. However, Washington has also expressed concern over Kenya’s expanding economic relationship with China, a factor that could feature in Vance’s private discussions with Kenyan leaders.
According to sources, Vance’s Kenya visit will run from November 24 to November 27, shortly after the conclusion of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Vice President’s office and Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have yet to issue official statements regarding the upcoming trip.
President Donald Trump has tasked Vance with representing the United States at the G20 summit, which will be held from November 22 to 23 in Johannesburg. South Africa, currently holding the rotating G20 presidency, will hand over leadership to the United States following the meeting.
Vance’s visit is expected to reaffirm America’s commitment to partnerships in Africa, highlighting Kenya’s crucial role in regional stability, trade, and diplomacy as Washington seeks to counter growing global competition on the continent.
