Govt confirms another landslide
The national government has reported yet another landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, just two days after a similar disaster took the lives of over 26 people. Rescue operations are currently in progress in the same area.
On Monday morning, November 3, 2025, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed the news, stating that the affected areas include Kipkenda Village, Kibendo, and Emsoo Ward in Keiyo North, with rescue efforts actively underway.
”The government regrets to report that another landslide has taken place in Kipkenda Village, Kibendo, Emsoo Ward, Keiyo North, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Rescue Efforts are Ongoing by the multi-agency teams. More updates to follow,” Mwaura took to X.
At the same time, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged residents of Kerio Valley to be cautious as heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc in most parts of the country and the Rift Valley.
”As heavy rainfall continues to be experienced across several parts of the country, the risk of landslides, especially along the Kerio Valley region, is heightened. Last night, a rockfall incident in the Kibendo area of Keiyo North claimed two lives and injured three others,” Murkomen, who is leading rescue operations in affected areas, said on Monday, November 3, 2025.
”I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those who were injured. I commend the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet and the Kenya Red Cross for their quick response and continued alertness to disaster incidents in the area. We continue to call on residents in the region to be aware of their surroundings and to report any signs of earth movements to local authorities,” he added.
Murkmomen’s warning comes on the heels of a weather update from Kenya Met, which has informed residents to brace for ongoing rainfall in various regions of the country on Monday, November 3, 2025.
In a forecast released on Sunday, November 2, 2025, the meteorologist pointed out that areas in the Highlands west of the Rift Valley—like Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kericho, and Elgeyo Marakwet—should prepare for showers and thunderstorms in some spots on Monday night and into Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2025.
