Eugene Wamalwa Dies During KDF Recruitment
Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), has shared his heartfelt condolences following the tragic passing of a university student who collapsed during a Kenya Defence Forces recruitment event in Bungoma County.
In a brief statement released on Thursday, October 23, Wamalwa expressed his sorrow to the family of the young man, who was named after him, as well as to the community of Kabuchai.
“I have learnt with great sadness of the death of a young man named after me who collapsed and died during the ongoing KDF recruitment in Kabuchai, Bungoma County,” the statement reads.
“My deepest condolences to Eugene Wamalwa’s family, Hon Kalasinger Majimbo, and the People of Kabuchai and Bungoma County for this tragic loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
A 22-year-old student from Masinde Muliro University tragically collapsed on Wednesday while taking part in a physical fitness test during the KDF recruitment exercise in Chwele, Bungoma County.
Bungoma Central Sub-County Police Commander David Saina reported that the young man collapsed during the physical exercise session and was quickly taken to Chwele Hospital, where he was sadly declared dead upon arrival around noon.
“The recruit fainted during the physical exercise stage and was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital at about noon. His body has been taken to the Bungoma Referral Hospital mortuary,” Saina stated.
Lieutenant Colonel Eliud Yegon, who is in charge of the recruitment exercise, encouraged hopeful military recruits to steer clear of drugs and to prepare thoroughly for the challenging recruitment process.
Yegon also pointed out that many young individuals who attended the exercise encountered issues because their names didn’t match those on their documents, which made the verification process a bit tricky.
“We have several cases where the recruits’ names per their birth certificates do not match what is on their academic certificates,” Yegon said.
The Kenya Defence Forces is kicking off recruitment exercises all through October to fill a variety of positions. This includes roles for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, Tradesmen/women, and other specialized positions.
