Court Charges Woman for Bhang Smuggling
A woman is in hot soup, facing drug trafficking charges after she was reportedly caught trying to sneak 50 rolls of bhang into the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
She was arrested on Wednesday, October 8, when court security officers stopped her during a routine search at the entrance.
The following day, she appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, where she pleaded not guilty to the trafficking charges.
Court documents reveal that she was found with a black paper bag filled with rolls of cannabis, leading to her immediate detention and transfer to anti-narcotics officers for further questioning.
In her defense, she explained to the court that she had picked up the black paper bag at the gate, believing it was filled with money.
She insisted that she had no idea what was actually inside and claimed she was being wrongly accused.
”I picked those things while entering the court gates, not knowing that it was bhang. Could I have known, I wouldn’t have bothered to pick them. I mistook them for money, and despite explaining this to the officers, they refused to believe me,” she told the court.
She made an emotional plea for leniency, explaining to the court that her arrest had caused her to lose contact with her special needs child, leaving her with no one to care for the little one.
Magistrate Onyina decided to transfer the case to the JKIA Law Courts, which specifically deal with trafficking-related offenses, and ordered that she stay in remand until the bail ruling on October 14.
”You have a right to legal representation. I therefore direct that the matter be heard at the JKIA Law Courts on October 13, 2025,” ruled Onyina.
In March of this year, a 55-year-old woman received a hefty 50-year prison sentence from a law court in Busia after the prosecution successfully made its case against her for trafficking narcotics, specifically 3.9 kg of heroin.
The court also imposed a fine of Ksh50 million, which she could pay to avoid serving time. This all came after her arrest on March 10, 2023, at the Busia One Border Point, where authorities discovered she was carrying 3.9 kg of heroin valued at Ksh11.8 million on the street.
