Sh12M Bhang Haul Seized
The battle against drug trafficking has ramped up significantly following a multi-agency operation led by NACADA in Ahero, Kisumu County, which dismantled a narcotics supply network linking Kisumu and Nairobi.
Acting on intelligence tips, a collaborative team made up of NACADA officers, the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) from Kisumu, and a specialized unit of the National Police Service (NPS) conducted a raid in the area. They managed to seize a substantial shipment of bhang that was headed for Nairobi and other towns.
In a dramatic early morning operation, officers managed to seize 12 sacks of bhang, all neatly packaged and ready for distribution. These drugs are estimated to have a street value of around Sh12 million, marking one of the largest busts in the region in recent months.
A key suspect, who is believed to be a major supplier for the Kisumu and Nairobi markets, was apprehended at the scene. She was promptly taken to Kisumu Police Station for processing before her court appearance.
Authorities have labeled this arrest as a crucial move in breaking down a trafficking network that’s been linked to the increasing drug use and associated crime in both cities.
Shortly after the operation, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the successful raid, calling it a clear indication of the government’s unwavering commitment to fighting narcotics and safeguarding communities.
“This seizure represents a significant blow to the drug cartels exploiting our youth and destabilising families. NACADA, working with other security agencies, will not relent until these networks are dismantled completely. We are committed to ensuring that those who profit from destroying lives face the full force of the law,” said Omerikwa.
He also encouraged everyone to get involved by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities to NACADA’s toll-free hotline, 1192, which is available 24/7. He stressed that public involvement is crucial in the fight against narcotics.
The confiscated drugs have been secured as evidence and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigations.
Authorities have confirmed that more operations are on the horizon in the coming weeks, as they ramp up a nationwide effort to crack down on drug traffickers and illegal alcohol cartels.
