GSU Officer Speared Outside State House
In a shocking turn of events, a man attacked and killed an armed police officer stationed at State House in Nairobi.
The assailant wielded a spear during the attack, which took place outside Gate D, a public access point to the State House.
At the time, the officer was on duty with his colleagues when he was suddenly assaulted. The spear struck him on the left side of his chest, resulting in his death.
The motive behind this incident, which occurred around 11 am, remains unclear.
The officer, who was part of the General Service Unit’s G Company, was declared dead upon arrival at Kenyatta National Hospital, where he had lost a significant amount of blood, according to officials.
The attacker was apprehended at the scene and taken in for questioning as panic ensued. It’s still uncertain whether he had any prior connection to the deceased officer. The location of the attack is typically a secure area where vehicles and pedestrians are screened before entering State House.
The incident caused alarm at State House, especially since President William Ruto was present and preparing to depart for Konza City in Machakos County.
Security measures were intensified after the officer’s colleagues raised the alarm. Police confirmed they have a suspect in custody who is currently being interrogated. He reportedly claimed that he was sent by Satan to carry out the murder.
The suspect, a 56-year-old Kenyan, was seen approaching the scene while pretending to be part of the street families, carrying a sack that concealed the spear.
Witnesses reported that he hid behind a flower bed, pulled out the spear, and then attacked the officer in the chest while the officer and two others were busy inspecting a vehicle entering the State House.
The assailant was taken into custody right at the scene. The officers who arrested him were reluctant to use their weapons, expressing a desire to understand his motives first.
Leading the investigation were senior police officials, including Kilimani police chief Patricia Yegon and her DCI counterpart Hussein Mahat, who visited both the crime scene and the hospital where the body was taken. They mentioned that the suspect is currently being investigated further regarding his reasons for the attack.
Additionally, other officials from State House were present at the hospital. This incident occurred just hours after another GSU officer was tragically strangled and drowned near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following a confrontation with a man.
