Rodri Sidelined Before Qualifiers
Spain has suffered a major setback ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, as Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The Spanish Football Federation confirmed the news on Monday, stating that the influential midfielder will not be available for the matches against Georgia and Bulgaria on October 11 and October 14, respectively.
“Rodri is out of the squad because of injury,” Spain’s national team announced in a brief statement, adding that medical staff will continue to monitor his recovery progress in Manchester.
The 29-year-old was forced off in the 21st minute of Manchester City’s Premier League victory over Brentford on Sunday after feeling discomfort in his hamstring. Though City went on to win the match, the sight of their midfield anchor leaving the pitch early raised immediate concerns for both club and country. After the match, Rodri admitted that he had felt tightness in his leg but hoped it was not serious.
Rodri has been an essential figure for both Manchester City and the Spanish national team. He played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024, where he was widely praised for his composure, leadership, and tactical intelligence. However, his brilliant form was followed by a difficult spell, as he suffered a serious knee injury in September 2024 that sidelined him for several months. He made his long-awaited return earlier this season, helping City regain their rhythm in midfield.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will now have to adjust his plans without one of his most reliable players. The national team has not yet confirmed whether a replacement will be called up for Rodri’s position, though reports suggest that several young midfielders are being considered.
Meanwhile, De la Fuente has already made one change to his squad, calling up Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias to replace the injured Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, who was forced to withdraw due to a muscle issue.
Rodri’s absence is a significant blow to Spain’s preparations as they aim to maintain their strong form in the World Cup qualifying campaign. Both fans and teammates will be hoping for a swift recovery for one of Europe’s finest midfielders.
