Kisumu Robber Jailed 20yrs
A court in Kisumu has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to a man after he was found guilty of committing robbery with violence.
The defendant, Michael Onyango Ochieng, who is better known as “Jonyo,” was convicted for assaulting and robbing John Okaka on May 11, 2024, in the Manyatta area of Kisumu.
Court documents reveal that the victim was attacked around 7 a.m. by three men wielding a crowbar, who struck him on the head and made off with two mobile phones and some cash.
“Prosecution witnesses, including neighbours, medical officers and investigation officers, testified and presented evidence in court that placed the accused person at the scene of crime, with some positively identifying him by name as a known individual in the area,” said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in a statement.
“The victim, who sustained head injuries, also identified Ochieng as one of his assailants.”
According to the ODPP, medical evidence presented in court confirmed that Okaka suffered a wound consistent with blunt force trauma. An identification parade conducted by police further reinforced the case against Ochieng.
“Despite denying the charges and claiming he had been arrested at a kiosk unrelated to the crime, the court ruled that the prosecution, through Raymond Nyonges, had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt,” the ODPP added.
During the judgment, Principal Magistrate Dennis Ogal of the Winam Law Courts made it clear that the evidence was unmistakable: Ochieng was indeed one of the individuals who assaulted and robbed Okaka.
