Man Jailed For Life
A 37-year-old man has been handed a life sentence by a Kabarnet court after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his 10-year-old neighbor in Songwot village, Tiaty East, Baringo County. The judgment brought to an end a painful case that had shocked the local community and left the young victim’s family devastated.
According to the prosecution, the crime took place on the night of December 20, 2024. On that day, the girl and her two-year-old brother were left at home alone while their mother attended a cultural function in the neighborhood. Taking advantage of the mother’s absence, the man entered the homestead and confronted the child.
The girl testified that she identified him with the aid of a spotlight, but he quickly kicked it aside before launching a vicious attack. Despite her desperate screams and attempts to fight him off, he overpowered her. Before fleeing into a nearby thicket, he threatened to kill her if she ever revealed what had happened, leaving her terrified and traumatized.
The matter was reported to the authorities soon after, and investigations were launched. During the trial, seven witnesses were called by the prosecution. Among them was the victim herself, who bravely recounted the ordeal in court. Her account was backed by medical reports and other crucial evidence that placed the accused at the scene.
Prosecutors urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, arguing that the assault was not only brutal but also left the minor with severe psychological scars. They emphasized the seriousness of crimes of this nature and the importance of sending a strong message of deterrence.
In her ruling, Magistrate Caroline Ateya described the crime as cruel and inhumane. She noted the lasting trauma inflicted on the child and stressed that the law provides strict penalties for sexual offenses against minors. She therefore sentenced the man to life imprisonment.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) welcomed the verdict, terming it a milestone in the fight against sexual violence. They commended the courage of the young victim in testifying and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society.
For the victim’s family, the sentence provided a measure of justice and relief after months of pain and waiting.
