Court Halts Police Recruitment
The Employment and Labour Relations Court has put a halt to the police recruitment process while it hears a petition that questions the legitimacy of the procedure.
Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa granted interim conservatory orders to suspend the recruitment after an application was submitted on September 30, 2025.
These orders mean that the recruitment will stay on hold until the court reaches a final decision regarding the petition.
The petitioner has a week to submit an additional affidavit and their arguments.
Justice Wasilwa has scheduled the next mention of the case for October 21, 2025, to check on compliance and to discuss the submissions.
On September 19, 2025, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) announced the recruitment of 10,000 police officers after a prolonged standoff with the National Police Service (NPS).
In a notice that appeared in a local newspaper, the commission encouraged interested and qualified candidates to download the recruitment forms online, complete them, and show up at specified centers for consideration.
The nationwide recruitment drive is set to take place from October 3 to October 9, 2025, at 416 centers across the country.
This initiative is aimed at Kenyan citizens aged 18 to 28 who have at least a D+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
The announcement follows weeks of tension between the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the National Police Service (NPS) regarding the recruitment process.
Previously, the commission had advocated for a new approach that would require applicants to submit their applications and be shortlisted before they could participate in the physical vetting process.
The proposal was ultimately set aside, which meant that all applicants could show up on recruitment day with their completed forms in hand.
