Gideon Moi Eyes Senate Return
The Kenya African National Union (KANU) has officially announced that its National Chairman, Gideon Moi, will be running in the upcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election.
In a statement released on Thursday, October 2, the party shared that Moi’s nomination came after extensive discussions both within the party and with the residents of Baringo.
“The Kenya African National Union (KANU) wishes to formally announce that, following extensive consultations, deliberations, and consensus within the party and with the people of Baringo, our National Chairman, Hon. Gideon Moi, has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election,” the statement read.
KANU also mentioned that Moi had graciously accepted the nomination, expressing his heartfelt thanks to the loyal party members and the broader Baringo community.
“In accepting this call to serve, Hon. Moi has expressed profound gratitude to KANU members, supporters, and the people of Baringo for their patience, confidence, and steadfast support,” the statement added.
KANU reports that Moi plans to focus his campaign on inclusive leadership and transparent governance, promising to run a campaign dedicated to serving the people.
“He remains committed to running a people-driven campaign anchored on inclusivity, accountability, and service to all. Therefore, as a party, we are confident that Hon. Gideon Moi’s candidature will resonate widely with the electorate,” the statement further read.
In closing, KANU encouraged supporters from Baringo and beyond to rally behind Moi as he aims to make his comeback to the Senate.
“We call upon our supporters across Baringo County and the country at large to rally behind our Chairman as we embark on this crucial journey,” the statement concluded.
Moi officially stepped into the world of active politics back in 2002, successfully winning the Baringo Central parliamentary seat, a position that had been held by his father, Daniel Arap Moi, before him.
He served as a Member of Parliament from 2003 to 2007, marking his official entry into the national political arena.
Over the years, Moi climbed the ranks within KANU, initially taking on the role of Vice-Chairman before being elected Chairman in April 2012, succeeding Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the 2013 general elections, he was elected as the Senator for Baringo County, a role he successfully retained after the 2017 elections.
As the 2022 elections approached, Moi briefly toyed with the idea of running for the presidency.
However, he ultimately decided to align KANU with the Azimio One Kenya Alliance, led by Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta, putting his presidential dreams on hold.
Despite his prominent national profile, he faced a setback in the 2022 Baringo senatorial race, losing to William Cheptumo of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
In the upcoming by-election on November 27, Moi will go head-to-head with Vincent Kiprono Chemitei, who secured the UDA nomination for the Senate by-election.
Cheburet received 48,791 votes, triumphing over eight other candidates in the nomination process held earlier this week.
His closest competitor, Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, garnered 30,897 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo Korir came in third with 23,613 votes.
“Mr Kiprono Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes in the UDA party nomination contest to clinch the party ticket for the November 27 Baringo Senatorial by-election,” UDA said in a statement.
