Student Dies After Botched Abortion
Eldoret residents are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking death of Winnie Jelagat, a 21-year-old student at Eldoret National Polytechnic, who was discovered lifeless in her house at Teleview Estate on Thursday morning.
According to initial reports, Winnie is believed to have attempted a self-induced abortion that went tragically wrong. She reportedly suffered severe hemorrhage and lost a significant amount of blood before help could reach her.
Friends became worried when they were unable to reach her on phone and decided to visit her house. Their worst fears were confirmed when repeated knocks at her door went unanswered. Upon gaining access, they were met with a devastating scene — Winnie was lying on her bed, one hand clutching her phone as though she had been trying to make a call. Her other hand rested limply on the bed.
Neighbors and friends said the discovery was deeply distressing. “It looked like she was trying to call someone for help,” one neighbor shared, describing the moment as heartbreaking. They believe Winnie may have tried to seek assistance in her final moments but was overwhelmed by pain and blood loss before she could get help.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident and urged students and young people to avoid unsafe methods when faced with unwanted pregnancies or personal crises. He stressed the importance of seeking professional medical care and counseling services.
Health experts continue to warn about the dangers of unsafe abortions, which remain a significant public health issue in Kenya. Many young women resort to risky methods due to stigma, lack of information, or fear of judgment, putting their lives in danger.
