Honour Raila by not beating your wife, husband
Reverend Joseph Otieno has called on Kenyans to honor the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga by fostering peace and respect in their homes.
While speaking at the burial service in Bondo on Sunday, October 19, 2025, the reverend encouraged everyone to embrace the values that Raila championed, such as justice, compassion, and equality.
Reverend Otieno spoke highly of Raila, portraying him as a person who truly valued harmony and fairness, not just in the political arena but also in his personal life. He urged the public to show their respect for Raila by living peacefully, saying, “When you get home, honour Raila by treating your spouse with kindness, not violence.”
He emphasized that the former Prime Minister was a passionate advocate against gender violence and firmly believed in empowering both men and women equally.
The reverend also encouraged Kenyans to support the election of more women into leadership roles, stating that this would be one of the most meaningful ways to pay tribute to Raila’s legacy.
“I want to plead that the country elect the right number of women to all the electoral positions. Because that will please the late Prime Minister,” he said.
He commended Raila for his unwavering commitment to equality and social justice, highlighting how he has always been a voice for the vulnerable and marginalized.
“Raila was a politician who always listened to the ground. Let us always listen to the people of Kenya, and let justice flow like a river,” Reverend Otieno added.
The reverend shared a heartfelt story that truly showcased Raila’s compassionate side. “There was this one time he visited our home with Oburu. After my wife served them tea and uji, they were off to a rally… he really showed how much he cares,” he reminisced.
He emphasized that Raila’s kindness went far beyond the political arena — he had a genuine concern for his brother Oburu and for everyone around him. Reverend Otieno wrapped up by encouraging everyone to highlight Raila’s positive traits and to honor his legacy through acts of love and respect.
“Pick something positive to remember him,” he said, emphasising that Kenya would best honour Raila by embracing peace, justice, and unity both in homes and across the nation.
