Former President of the Law Society of Kenya, Nelson Havi, has officially joined Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as political alliances start to form in anticipation of the 2027 general election.

Havi’s involvement with the party came to light when he was spotted alongside Gachagua at the DCP offices in Lavington, Nairobi, proudly wearing party attire.

In welcoming him, Gachagua praised Havi as a formidable legal expert whose background would enhance the party’s effectiveness in legislation, representation, and oversight. He emphasized that DCP aims to be a political haven for professionals eager to step into leadership positions.

“DCP party requires great legal minds for legislation, representation, and oversight. I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi, one of the greatest legal minds in the country, to walk with us in his quest to represent the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly. DCP is the home of progressive professionals who desire political leadership,” Gachagua posted.

Havi also confirmed the news in a quick reply to Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who had asked if the move was indeed happening.

“Confirmed, Mwalimu,” Havi said in response.

Havi’s recent move marks his return to the world of active electoral politics, as he sets his sights on the Westlands parliamentary seat. The senior counsel previously ran for this seat in 2022 under a UDA ticket but unfortunately lost to the current MP, Tim Wanyonyi.

Since then, he has been quite vocal about legal and governance matters, making his transition to DCP a significant boost to the party’s expanding political presence.

This shift comes just hours after Kanini Kega, an MP from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), left the Jubilee Party to join DCP.

In an update on Wednesday, February 4th, Gachagua confirmed Kega’s new role in the party, calling it a return to his political roots.

Welcoming Kanini Kega, Gachagua emphasized that DCP serves as a political home for leaders dedicated to shaping the future leadership of the country.

“Welcome home Kanini Kega. DCP Party is the home of progressive leaders who desire leadership in the future,” he said.

Reacting to Gachagua’s post, Kanini Kega chimed in with, “Wantam it is.” For those unfamiliar, “Wantam” is a slang term meaning “one term,” often used by opposition leaders to suggest that President William Ruto will only be in office for a single term.

These developments come as political parties across the country are busy bolstering their structures in preparation for the upcoming 2027 election.
