Five Charged in Murder of Kasipul MP
Five individuals have been charged in connection with the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ongond’o Were, thanks to a successful effort by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to merge two separate cases that were previously filed in the Kibera and Milimani Law Courts.
Lady Justice Diana Kavedza gave the green light for this consolidation, allowing the prosecution to move forward with a single case against all five suspects: William Imoli Shigali, known as Imo; Edwin Odour Odhiambo, also called Machuani; Ebel Ochieng, who goes by Dave Calo; Isaac Kuria Chege, referred to as Kush; and Allan Omondi Ogola.
These suspects are alleged to have shot MP Were fatally on April 30, 2025, around 7:40 p.m., near the City Mortuary Roundabout along Ngong Road in Kilimani, Nairobi County.
Before the consolidation, Shigali, Odour, and Ochieng pleaded not guilty to the murder charges at the Kibera High Court, while Kuria and Omondi did the same at the Milimani Law Courts.
Justice Kavedza scheduled bond rulings for the first three suspects on August 14, 2025, and the other two are set to have their bail application heard on September 22, 2025.
A post-mortem conducted by government pathologist Dr. Oduor at Lee Funeral Home revealed that the legislator died from extensive internal injuries caused by five gunshot wounds that penetrated vital organs. “The nature and extent of the injuries made survival impossible,” Dr. Oduor told reporters.
The examination was observed by the family lawyers of the MP, Apollo Mboya and Peter Kopere, along with senior homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), headed by Martin Nyuguto, the Head of Homicide.
Initial investigations by the DCI suggest that the attack was planned in advance. CCTV footage, mobile phone triangulation, and witness accounts show that Hon. Were was followed from Parliament by both a car and a motorcycle before being ambushed.
In the past week, police operations have resulted in several arrests and the recovery of crucial evidence. DCI officers confiscated live ammunition, spent cartridges, and two vehicles believed to have been involved in the crime.
During a raid at the first suspect’s home, authorities found USD 4,800, while the second suspect’s residence yielded nine live rounds of ammunition of an unverified caliber and eight undocumented teargas canisters.
The seized vehicles are currently undergoing forensic analysis, including DNA testing.
