Billie Eilish Dominates 2024 American Music Awards, Wins Artist of the Year
Billie Eilish, known for her hit “Birds of a Feather,” took home the top honor at the American Music Awards on Monday, snagging the title of artist of the year during a glamorous red-carpet event in Las Vegas, where fans had a say in the winners.
The pop sensation outshone heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, and Morgan Wallen to claim the artist award. Eilish didn’t just stop there; she swept all seven categories she was nominated in, including album of the year and favorite touring artist.
“This is so crazy. I feel speechless,” Eilish said in a video message from Europe, where she is on tour. “I wish I could be there tonight.”
Eilish, 23, released her third studio album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” in May 2024.
“That’s So True” singer Gracie Abrams, winner of new artist of the year, also sent a recording to accept her honor. She thanked her fans, who she said “I have been lucky enough to learn from.”
“They have reminded me of the light that exists out there,” Abrams said.
SZA snagged some AMA awards, taking home the title of favorite female R&B artist and winning for her song “Saturn.” Meanwhile, Becky G was recognized as the favorite female Latin artist.
Interestingly, many big names on the nominees’ list chose not to attend the live broadcast on CBS.
One notable absentee was Beyoncé, who won favorite female country artist and favorite country album for “Cowboy Carter,” marking her first AMA wins in the country categories. Post Malone also took home the award for favorite male country artist.
Other stars who didn’t show up included Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar. Lamar entered the ceremony with a whopping 10 nominations but walked away with just one award, favorite hip-hop song, for “Not Like Us.”
The celebrations kicked off with the fabulous Jennifer Lopez taking the stage, belting out a six-minute medley featuring 23 hits from the nominees. Among the tracks were Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” and Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
In a heartfelt moment, Janet Jackson received the Icon award, recognizing her immense impact and influence on artists around the world.
“I don’t consider myself an icon,” Jackson said on stage. “The one thing that I hope for is that I’m an inspiration for others to follow their dreams and succeed.”
Eighty-year-old Rod Stewart was celebrated with a lifetime achievement award, and he took to the stage to dance and sing his classic hit “Forever Young,” which first came out in 1984.
Stewart said that when he started his career “I had this burning ambition to sing.”
