Special memorial service for Raila
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced plans to hold a special memorial prayer service in honor of its late leader, Raila Odinga, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Kampala, Uganda.
In a statement shared on the party’s official X account on Monday, October 27, ODM said the event will serve as both a spiritual reflection and a celebration of Raila’s enduring legacy, not only in Kenya but also across the East African region.
According to the statement, the memorial has been organized to appreciate Raila’s remarkable contributions to democracy, unity, and social justice. “A special memorial prayer service in honour of our departed leader @RailaOdinga will be held tomorrow at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Uganda. Special thanks to Captain @Mukulaa, Baba’s friend and team for this honour. We are grateful,” ODM posted.
The tribute in Uganda underscores Raila’s far-reaching influence and friendships beyond Kenya’s borders. Captain Mike Mukula, a respected Ugandan politician and close friend of the late leader, is among those who helped organize the ceremony. The event is expected to draw Kenyan and Ugandan political figures, diplomats, and longtime supporters of the ODM party who wish to pay their final respects.
Raila Odinga, often referred to affectionately as “Baba,” was a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades. His leadership inspired generations and shaped major national conversations on governance, freedom, and equity. His passing earlier this month left the country in deep mourning, sparking tributes from across Africa and beyond.
The memorial announcement also came just hours after ODM confirmed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, as the new party leader. The transition marks a new chapter for the movement as it seeks to uphold the values and vision that Raila championed throughout his life.
Tuesday’s service in Kampala will offer mourners another chance to honor a man whose political courage and commitment to justice left an indelible mark on the African continent.
