A member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has been arrested for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl within the 10 Engineers Barracks in Nanyuki, Laikipia County. The officer, identified as Sergeant Paul Muriungi Muteria, was taken into police custody following the disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the military community and the surrounding area.

According to a police report seen by the media, the offence is said to have taken place inside the barracks, which serves as the headquarters of the 10 Engineers Battalion, a unit under the Kenya Army’s Corps of Engineers. Investigators revealed that the young victim had been in the vicinity when the alleged crime occurred, leading to an immediate report being filed at the Nanyuki Police Station.

Confirming the arrest, authorities stated that Sgt. Muteria is currently being detained at Nanyuki Police Station, where he will remain in custody pending arraignment in court. The suspect is expected to face charges of defilement, contrary to Section 8 of the Sexual Offences Act, which carries a minimum sentence of twenty years imprisonment upon conviction.

Laikipia County police officers, together with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), have since launched a detailed probe into the case. Detectives are said to be collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from witnesses, including family members of the victim and personnel stationed at the barracks.

The case has raised serious concerns about child protection and safety within military facilities. Child rights activists have called for a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing that justice must be served regardless of the suspect’s position in the armed forces. They urged the Kenya Defence Forces to cooperate fully with investigators and ensure that such incidents are dealt with firmly.

Meanwhile, residents of Nanyuki expressed outrage and disbelief, describing the incident as both shocking and heartbreaking. They called for tighter security and stricter measures to prevent civilians, especially minors, from being exposed to potential danger within restricted areas such as military installations.

As the investigation continues, all eyes remain on the military and police authorities to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly for the young victim and her family.
