KDF kills 2 Police officers
Tension is rising in Turkana South after two Kenya Police Reservists (KPRs) were reportedly shot and killed by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers in Kaptir village on Wednesday night. This incident has ignited outrage among local leaders and residents.
On Friday, Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai and other Turkana leaders condemned the killings, calling for immediate investigations and justice for the fallen officers, who were said to be returning home after ensuring security at the Lokwar Irrigation Scheme.
“These were officers serving their community with dedication. According to eyewitnesses, they had surrendered and identified themselves before being shot in cold blood,” Governor Lomorukai said. “We will not rest until justice is done.”
The governor, along with County Assembly Speaker Charles Lokiyoto and Woman Representative Cecilia Asinyen Ishuu, paid a visit to the grieving families. Later, he addressed a group of frustrated residents who had blocked the Kitale–Lodwar Highway in protest against the rising insecurity in Turkana South.
Lomorukai criticized the “reckless actions” of the security forces, claiming they were hindering efforts to restore peace in the troubled North Rift region. He promised to reach out to senior officials in the Ministry of Defence to ensure that accountability is upheld.
“Those responsible must face the law. We cannot have our people gunned down by those meant to protect them,” he declared.
The county leader has called on the national government to ramp up efforts to drive out bandits who are taking refuge in the Turkana South Game Reserve, emphasizing that this protected area is being unlawfully occupied by criminals.
“This reserve is designated land managed by the county, not a hideout for bandits. We need coordinated operations, not more internal violence,” Lomorukai emphasized.
Woman Representative Cecilia Asinyen described the killings as “unacceptable and barbaric,” pointing out that evidence from the scene, including recovered cartridges, suggests involvement from the KDF.
“These were dedicated officers serving their community. Their only fault was trying to protect farmers. We must ensure justice is served,” she stated.
County Assembly Speaker Charles Lokiyoto urged for calm and encouraged leaders to seek dialogue as a lasting solution to conflicts related to borders.
Turkana South Deputy County Commissioner Gideon Ombongi, who was with the leaders, reassured residents that investigations into the incident are underway and asked for patience as the process continues.
Governor Lomorukai also mentioned that he had updated President William Ruto on the escalating insecurity in Turkana South and requested an extension of the ongoing voter registration to ensure that affected residents are not left out.
Deputy County Commissioner Gideon Ombongi also condemned the killing of the KPR officers and assured both leaders and the public that thorough investigations will be conducted and justice will be served regarding this incident.
